If you haven’t yet registered to vote, get it off your to-do list now. 

Today is National Voter Registration Day, and thousands of local, state and national organizations have mobilized to make sure millions of people don’t miss the chance to cast their votes in this year’s Nov. 6 election.

Six million people didn’t vote in the 2008 elections because they either did not know how to register or because they missed the voter registration deadline.

The voter registration deadline for Pennsylvania is Oct. 9.

Where can I register to vote? 

• You may fill out a voter registration form in person at the Allegheny County Elections Division, 542 Forbes Ave., Suite 604, Pittsburgh. Regular business hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The telephone number is 412-350-4510.
• You may also register to vote at a Pennsylvania Department of Transportation photo license center when you obtain or update your driver's license.
• In addition to PennDOT, you can register to vote at many other state government offices, including:
  • State offices that provide public assistance and services to persons with disabilities.
  • Armed Forces Recruitment Centers.
  • The Allegheny County Marriage License Bureau located on the First Floor of the City-County Building in downtown Pittsburgh.
  • Area Agencies on Aging;
  • Centers for independent living;
  • Allegheny County mental health and mental retardation offices;
  • Student disabillity services offices of the State System of Higher Education;
  • Offices of special education.

• Download the voter registration form in the photo box of this article, fill it out and mail it to Voter Registration Office, Allegheny County Elections Division, 542 Forbes Avenue, Room 609, Pittburgh, PA 15219-2913. The phone number is 412-350-4500.

• Registration-by-mail forms—which may also be used to change your name, address or political party affiliation—are available at many municipal buildings, state liquor stores and some branches of the U.S. Postal Service.
• In addition, forms may be obtained at many federal, state Senate and state House Representative District Offices as well as from your local political party committee members. Forms may also be obtained at many colleges and universities.

The VotesPA website states that to register to vote, you must be:

• A citizen of the U.S. for at least one month before the next election.
• A resident of Pennsylvania and the election district in which you want to register and vote for at least 30 days before the next election.
• At least 18 years of age on or before the day of the next election.
