North Hills Senior High students crafted and designed handmade snowflakes as part of the Operation Snowflake campaign for Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn. 

The effort to help create a Winter Wonderland for students affected by the December school tragedy was orchestrated by North Hills High School teachers Sue and Buck Batson along with employees at the First Niagara Bank branch along McKnight Road. 

Students in the teachers’ physics, conceptual physics and astronomy classes pitched in to create dozens of unique snowflakes. The snowflakes were mailed to Connecticut to decorate the school and help create a welcoming atmosphere upon students’ return. 

The project, a part of the curriculum yearly, teaches students the structure of ice and snowflakes.
