PA Turnpike Toll Hike Takes Effect
Drivers on the Pennsylvania Turnpike start paying higher tolls today.
The cost of driving on the Pennsylvania turnpike has gone up again.
Tolls for cash paying customers went up 10-percent. The increase is just 2-percent for drivers using E-Z Pass.
The new rates, which take effect Jan. 6, are expected to generate roughly $25 million in new revenue in 2013.
The toll increase is needed to satisfy the turnpike's obligation to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to help address a transportation-funding shortfall, according to a news release put out by the Pa. Turnpike Commission.
More changes are in the works as turnpike officials consider the possibility of eliminating toll plazas and cash payments.
