Stan's Market Opens Second Location in West View; Offers Fresh Produce

An institution in the Pittsburgh Strip District, Stan's Market is opening a second location in a formerly vacant building along Perry Highway, near the intersection with Chalfonte Avenue.

Stan's Market, of the Strip District in Pittsburgh, has opened a second location in West View near the intersection of Chalfonte Avenue and Perry Highway.

The new location, at 500 Perry Highway, has been open intermittently throughout the day for around two weeks, with produce sold in the parking lot on green stands. Repairs are being made to the building on the site, which used to house a Schwebel's Bakery Outlet, and the goal is to move the produce market inside for year-round operation, said Steve Stanek, owner of the Strip District location and co-owner of the West View location.

Stanek has run the Strip District location at 1811 Penn Ave. for 14 years. He said a casual conversation with one of his customers, the owner of the 17,509 square-foot lot, Paul E. Chambers, led to expanding to the new location.

"I think there's enough business up there," he said, adding that they also looked at another location on McKnight Road also owned by Chambers.

Chambers, who has owned the property since 1988 according to Allegheny County property records under the business name 500 P.H. Associates, is a partner in the new venture. An occupancy permit was issued by July 19.

He said he didn't remember exactly how long the property had been vacant, and records were not immediately available. He said he leased the property to the bakery outlet before it abandoned the location after a car damaged the building.

Day-to-day operation of the new produce stand will be managed by Joe McCain, of the North Side.

The shop will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. seven days a week.

It offers fresh produce such as peppers, peaches, corn, and tomatoes, which they try to buy locally when available, McCain said. It also offers produce such as strawberries, cherries, banannas, pineapples, lemons and nectarines.

Stanek said he is excited about the exposure. The Strip District location is geared toward foot traffic, he said, while the new location will be trying to catch the eye of the people driving by.

"Up there, its going to be a little bit more of a challenge," he said.
