A Mt Lebanon man compiled clips from 29 films shot in Pittsburgh turned them into a music video.
From "Silence of the Lambs" to "Dark Knight Rises" to "Jack Reacher," Pittsburgh has been the backdrop to more than two dozen Hollywood films. Mt. Lebanon native Aron Zelkonwicz, who grew up watching many of those films, decided to take it one step further by gathering iconic Pittsburgh scenes from 29 films shot in Pittsburgh and compiling them into a music video. “I thought it would be fun,” he told KDKA'S John Shumway. “I had seen all these movies filmed in Pittsburgh and thought why not take the parts everyone wants to see, the shots of Pittsburgh, and put those together.” His labor of love took weeks, in between rehearsals and performances with the Pittsburgh Symphony where he plays the cello. North Hills High School vocal ensembles were awarded top rankings at the Kings Island Music in the Parks Festival near Cincinnati, Ohio. The North Hills Women’s Choir, North Hills Symphonic Choir and North Hills Singers earned first-place awards with Superior rankings. The North Hills Singers earned a Best Overall Ensemble Award in the mixed high school choir category, and senior Ese Omabele received an Outstanding Female Solo medal for her performance in the Symphonic Choir’s selection “Praise His Holy Name.” A total of 64 North Hills students participated in the festival held at Kings High School in Mason, Ohio, next to Kings Island Amusement Park. The North Hills School District hosted the 41st annual Arts Alive program Friday May 3 at North Hills High School. The annual program celebrates the creative accomplishments of students in kindergarten through high school. The event featured student work from a variety of mediums such as pottery, paintings, drawings, sculpture, photographs, school publications and writing projects as well as student work from the technology education department (see attached pictures). Cranberry resident J.J. Hensley has an unusual way of pushing himself through the miles of his long distance runs—he gets creative inside his own head. A former police officer and special agent with the U.S. Secret Service, Hensley was training for the 2010 Pittsburgh Half Marathon when he began to plot the outline for a fictional murder-mystery during runs “Because, what else are you going to think about when you’re running one to two hours at a time?” he joked. Once back at his computer, Hensley began to type out the story lines he came up with during training. Pretty soon, he had a novel on his hands. When it was complete, he began to show the novel to friends, who gave their feedback, and eventually garnered a literary agent. “Now, …

The concert series kicks off on Friday, May 31.
Allegheny County officials have announced the line-up for the 2013 Summer Concert Series. The Pittsburgh CLO will kick off the concert series on Friday, May 31, with “A Gleeful Evening, Vol. 3” featuring Gene Kelly Award winners at the South Park Amphitheater. Pittsburgh Opera will begin the season on Sunday, June 2 at the Hartwood Acres Park Amphitheater. Summer performances include Grammy Award winners Sarah Watkins, the Yellowjackets and Rickie Lee Jones at Hartwood Acres, as well as Grammy Award nominees Monty Alexander, Sixpence None the Richer and James Hunter at South Park. Cameron Huffmyer was one of six area high school seniors awarded a scholarship from the Blackwood Theater Organ Society.
Cameron Huffmyer, who plays the Tuba at North Hills High School, has been awarded a scholarship from the Blackwood Theatre Organ Society, the group said in a statement. Huffmyer was one of six area high school seniors awarded a 2013 scholarship. The Blackwood Theater Organ Society is a not for profit organization created to encourage students to pursue instrumental music performance careers. Over the past thirteen years, the Society has awarded more than $201,000 in scholarships to high school seniors planning to pursue an instrumental music performance degree in college. A local unicycling club is hosting the 2013 North American Unicycling Convention and Championships.
A Western Pennsylvania unicycling club will host the 2013 unicycling championships this summer in the region. The Butler Wobble, a Butler County-based collection of unicyclists formed in 2009, won the bid to host the 40th annual North American Unicycling Convention and Championships from July 21 through July 27. “We’re a small, young club, but it was the enthusiasm and the support of the locals for the various charity runs and other non-professional athletic events in the area that made us stretch beyond our reach and bid on hosting NAUCC in 2013,” Lisa Krack, events director, said in a statement.
