Helen (Dee) Spade has worked for the North Hills School District for nearly four decades.
Helen (Dee) Spade, who has worked for the North Hills School District custodial staff for nearly 40 years, is running for North Hills School Director. The following is her statement announcing her candidacy: I am a candidate because of my love of children and recognition that schools are the cornerstones of our communities and deciding factors in our futures and quality of life. I want to make sure that children are always the first consideration in any decision-making. Our number one goal should always be to improve student achievement and to assure that our students are ready for employment or higher education when they leave North Hills. School board directors are agents of the state, but elected by our neighbors. We need to send the …

The proposal is in reaction to residents' complaints of noisy garbage trucks late at night.
Ross Township Commissioners will vote at their next meeting on May 22 to shorten the hours in which trash can be collected. Currently, commercial and non-residential trash can be collected between 6 a.m. and 11 p.m. An amendment to the township's solid waste disposal ordinance would change the hours to 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. The commissioners acted after hearing complaints from two residents who complained about noisy, night garbage collections near three North Hills school district buildings. Frank Kodrich lives on First Avenue, near the Senior High School. “Right now we have a dumpster that comes in at roughly 10:30 or 11 o’clock at night," Kodrich told the commissioners. "Once he picks up that dumpster, and you all know what a dumpster …

The 25 foot high dam is designed to control storm water runoff into Girty's Run.
Several hundred yards behind the rear parking lot of The Haven Personal Care home off of Cemetery Lane, workers are moving tons of earth in preparation for a 25-foot high dam. The dam will bridge the steep-sided valley that runs parallel to a portion of Cemetery lane and is designed to control storm water runoff into Girty's Run near Babcock Boulevard. The dam has been in the works since 2007, when Ross Commissioners voted to seek up to $1 million from the PA Department of Environmental Resources. That vote followed a two-hour meeting that was devoted mostly to public complaints about flooding problems along Girty's Run, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported. Had he been on the board of commissioners at the time, current Ross Commissioner …
