Giant Eagle Expanding McIntyre Square Store, Adding Beer Sales & Drive-Thru Pharmacy

The store is also adding an employee parking lot to free up more space for customers.

Giant Eagle is expanding its store at McIntyre Square by taking over the space formerly occupied by the Dollar Wave.

"They're looking at redesigning a drive through for the pharmacy, on the south side of the building," said Bruce Betty, Land Use Administrator for the town of McCandless. "They want to get a liquor license and they want to move the restaurant toward the front of the building."

The Pennsylvania Supreme court ruled in 2010 that grocery stores and other chain retailers can buy and use restaurant liquor licenses. Giant Eagle now sells beer at more than 20 stores throughout the region, the Pittsburgh Business Times reported.

To free up more parking, the grocery store chain is also adding an employee parking lot.

"We have approved a new parking area for them," said Betty. "As you're coming into McIntyre Square off of Peebles, on the left hand side that will be an employee parking lot."

Betty expects the expansion will get underway sometime early in 2013.

This is one Giant Eagle location that no matter what time or day you go, it's packed. The lines are long and people don't seem to understand how to self check out or they'll have a cart full for the express self check out.

Anyone else notice what a "dud" Good Cents has turned out to be? I was recently in there in the afternoon during the week and I was one of about ten people in the store.

You'll have that. Same with Bottom Dollar. The prices and savings aren't as big as people might think. After the coupons expired form the grand opening, I expected a huge drop off at both places. Still, it will exist untill BD folds, which they will fold first as GE will do what it takes to make that happen. Then Good Cents will closed after some "report" that it's "not meeting expectations". Then all the workers will be living in a van down by the river.

Checkouts are a major problem with Giant Eagle in general. I know a lot of people like to bash Wal-Mart on checkout time, and the three Wally Worlds I frequent down here can be quite slow, but Giant Eagle is far worse. The biggest problem is the fact they have tons of checkouts and only about three are manned on any given day. The rest are self checkout and I think most people prefer not to self checkout, at least from what my buddies tell me. Yes, it requires more manpower to do that, but that would be a good incentive to create jobs, and Giant Eagle certainly has the resources to do that. As far as taking over Dollar Wave, I knew it was only a matter of time. Given the fact both a drive-thru pharmacy and beer sales exist at Glenshaw, it was almost a given McIntyre would be upgraded unless a Market District was planned for McCandless Crossing. I don't think McCandless is as pro-Giant Eagle as Ross (one property in the entire town compared to four in Ross). Parking does need addressed. The only Giant Eagle property I've seen with good parking is the Shadyside Market District, which has an underground garage. Constructing this would be impossible now. Tighter restrictions on park and ride need to be put into place. McIntyre Square bans it but I think people do it there anyhow.

This is exactly why Giant Eagle was foolish to put a Good Cents next to Bottom Dollar. Why not put it in another location, maybe clearing some land or retrofitting in Etna or Millvale? If Giant Eagle tries to make a Bottom Dollar closure happen, I wonder if it will be as pronounced as GNC's attack on Vitamin Shoppe. That billboard next to the North Hills Village Vitamin Shoppe still there when I was back in November and was, at least a few weeks ago, printed on both sides.

They should have put the Valu King / Good Cents into the Giant Eagle on Brighton Road - that location is a disgrace to the Giant Eagle name.
McKnightmare December 11, 2012 at 03:59 AM
Scott, I laugh every time I see that sign. And every time I drive past, I see no one in there. I actually think the design is all wrong. You have to park in the back and walk to the side. When they were remodeling it, they should have rebuilt it on the back parking lot, and moved the parking up front. But I do laugh at the sign. It was there as of last week. STILL.

First of all, it's in Bellvue, an disgraceful area of the North Hills to begin with.

Sorry McK.... the Brighton Rd. Giant Eagle shamefully is in Ross.

Don't get me started... I don't see how expanding the Mcintyre will make it all better. Parking is bad.. service is bad. Check out lines are loooong.. the sewer system in the back ot the store backs up and smells so bad you can't shop. Its just not a good place to shop! They should have given us a Market District down here long ago.. but no.. they put it in Pine and its smaller than the McIntyre store. Well... I will shop at the old shabby shop and saves... at least the prices are much lower than GE... so I don't mind the shabby.

I'm pleased about the beer sales, now I can shop for all my alcohol needs at the one place (with the wine and liquor store next door). I hope they make big improvements to the entire entry area. It's currently a congested mess and the constant dangerous conflicts with traffic and pedestrians is an accident waiting to happen. I wish they would expand the whole drive-thru concept to include on-line grocery ordering. A store employee collects your items and you pick them up at a drive-thru.

The mc intyre location is gold. My neighbor was a builders square manager, it was on the lower level under giant eagle. it was their top store on the east coast. the giant eagle is a top store too in the region. I believe this is why mc candless crossing will not have a market district.. 2 grocery stores in the same shopping center is not a good idea. Remember festival foods in mc intyre square?? Gabes is there now. McKnightmare I absolutely REFUSE to use a self check out!! Unless a store wants to give me a discount!
Joan O'Brien December 12, 2012 at 01:45 AM
Customers soud get a discount for checking out their own groceries & bagging therm! I wish these lanes were staffed by people who need jobs. As to the parking lot, iti s crowded & the spaces should hav been bigger when zoning was aproved.
