North Hills Sophomore Recognized for Volunteerism

North Hills High School sophomore Ryan Balog has been named Youth Volunteer of the Year by IN Shaler Magazine.

Ryan will be recognized for his outstanding volunteer efforts at the inaugural IN Community Magazines Community Awards for Service Excellence on May 10 in the West Club Lounge at Heinz Field.

There will be a reception starting at 5:30 p.m. followed by dinner and presentations beginning at 6:15 p.m. The event will feature WTAE-TV news anchor Andrew Stockey, a performance by The Clarks and raffle prizes.

Each awardee will receive a replica IN Community Magazine cover featuring the awardee. Many recipients of the IN Community Magazines Community Awards for Service Excellence will be featured on the covers and/or upcoming editions of the magazine.

Ryan is a dedicated volunteer, who maintains an exemplary academic and community service record. He is a member of the Hands for Service Club and Diversity Club at the high school, and he also was selected to represent North Hills in the PMEA Honors Orchestra festival as a cellist. He plays on the tennis team and is an avid baseball player.

During the summer, Ryan volunteers at both St. Teresa of Avila and St. Sebastian church festivals. He also helps out during St. Sebastian’s vacation bible school where he assists younger children with crafts, songs and games.

Additionally, Ryan donates his time to Cumberland Crossing Assisted Living Facility residents. At Cumberland Crossing, he assists the activities director with many of the programs available to the facility’s senior citizens.
