According to the order's website, Mother Josephine (Barbara Timofieff) Finatowicz came from Russia to the United States to begin what is known today as the Sisters of the Holy Spirit of Pittsburgh, and other works related to these ministries. She had founded a community of sisters who worked in Europe taking care of the sick, the elderly, the poor, orphans and the abandoned.

In 1911, Bishop Regis Canevin gave the sisters permission to build a motherhouse in Donora. Not long after, Bishop Canevin presented a new constitution to the congregation on April 25, 1913, the website states.

After Donora, the sisters moved to West View and then Ross Township, and built motherhouses and ministries. Today they are located on Clarwin Avenue in Ross.

The year-long commemoration began with a luncheon in October. Each month throughout the year, the sisters are participating in a series of outreach activities for the poor in the area.

Sunday's Mass will be the high point of their celebration.
