Plans for Fuel Pumps at New GetGo on McKnight Get Zoning Board Approval

Giant Eagle Inc. plans to add a convenience store and nine fueling islands for a total of 18 pumps on property at 7675 McKnight Road, home to the former Demor's Lincoln Mercury car dealership.

Giant Eagle Inc. received a 4-0 vote Wednesday from the five-member Ross Township Zoning Hearing Board for permission to install fueling stations at a proposed GetGo convenience store and gas station to be built along McKnight Road.

The proposed business is to be located at 7675 McKnight Road, on the property .

Giant Eagle plans to add nine fueling islands for a total of 18 pumps on the 131,199 square-foot lot, said James Atzert, chairman of the zoning hearing board.

Seventeen pumps will be used for gasoline, and one pump will be used for diesel, he said.

The approval Wednesday was for a variance request specifically for the fuel pumps. Current zoning in the McKnight Road Business District does not outright permit gasoline sales.

The zoning designation, C-1, is the township's most lenient commercial zoning, however, and permits higher intensity commercial and residential uses.

The company also owns a nearby at 5603 Babcock Blvd.

Zoning officials were told the company plans to keep that location open, Atzert said.

Questions regarding the company's plans for the McKnight Road and Babcock Boulevard locations, which were emailed to a Giant Eagle spokesman at his request Thursday morning, were not answered as of 4 p.m. Patch will provide information from the company as it becomes available.

Further plans for the new business are expected to be presented at later dates to the township planning commission and board of commissioners for approval.

Dan Hankins, the township building code official and zoning officer, said in a message sent to township commissioners that they can expect to see an application for site plan approval as soon as January 2012.

Zoning hearing board member and vice-chairman Beth Schellhaas was absent from Wednesday's meeting.
