Possible Listeria Threat Prompts Food Recall at Target Stores

A Milwaukee company is expanding its recall of various salads, slaw, and dips sold at Target because of a potential listeria contamination.

Garden-Fresh Foods Inc. is voluntarily recalling products sold under the Market Pantry, Archer Farms, D'Amico, Roundy's, Grandpa's, Maggie's and Finest Tradition, Chef's Kitchen, Garden-Fresh, Weis, Spartan and Portillo brands.

The company said the recalled ready-to-eat salads, slaw and dip sold may be contaminated with the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes.

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, Listeria monocytogenes is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes-fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. 

Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

Consumers who have purchased any of the suspect products are urged to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. Currently there has been no illness or complaints related to this recall, the FDA said.
