Price War: Giant Eagle Announces Price Cuts on 3,000 Items

Some of the reductions went into effect on Wednesday.

Giant Eagle said this week its lowering prices on more than 3,000 grocery items by about 15 percent, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Competition in the grocery business is fierce. Giant Eagle is not only competing with traditional grocers such as Kuhn's, Shop & Save and Foodland, but also discounters such as Aldi's and Bottom Dollar, and mass merchants such as Walmart and Target.

"It's a challenging environment right now," Jim Hertel, managing partner at consulting firm Willard Bishop in Barrington, Ill, told the P-G.

For that reason, Giant Eagle is also mailing coupons and gift cards directly to its customers, continuing with its popular Fuel Perks program, and has reduced its corporate workforce.

The new price cuts will not replace other established offers, such as double coupons up to 99 cents or gas discounts, the Post-Gazette reported.

Giant Eagle is also strengthening its hunger relief efforts throughout the communities it serves by donating an additional 500,000 meals to regional food banks.

Giant Eagle has locations in West View Park Plaza and McIntyre Square.
