FAQ: Waste Management's New Recycling Bins for Ross Township

The new, larger bins replace the smaller, grey ones starting the week of Monday, June 3.

You've probably seen them just about everywhere in Ross Township in the last few days -- those 65-gallon recycling bins distributed by Waste Management. Ross Commissioners voted March 4 to opt into automated recycling collection, where feasible in the township -- and they've already prompted some criticism from residents.  We thought it would be helpful to post answers to the most frequently asked questions. When should I start using the new bin?
The week of June 3. What can I put in the new bin?

  • All papers (newsprint, phone books, magazines, corrugated, etc.)
  • Glass (beverage and food containers only)
  • Plastics # 1-7 (food, beverage, shampoo bottles, etc.)
  • Tin and aluminum food and beverage containers
Where do I place the bin on collection day?
Containers should be placed with the lids opening toward the street with a minimum of three feet between each container and other objects. Why is the placement of the bin so important?
Waste Management says the new equipment is designed to be automated so the driver does not leave the cab. The truck has a mechanical arm that reaches the bin so it is very important to follow the placement instructions on the lid each time you place the bin out for pick-up, preventing any interruption in service.
