Millard J. "Chip" Mella

Mella served his community as a Ross Township Police Officer, retiring in 1993 after 25 years on the force.

Millard J. "Chip" Mella, 78, of McCandless, died Monday, April 23, 2012 at his home, surrounded by his family, after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born in Pittsburgh April 13, 1934, to Anna and Charles Mella. Chip is survived by his daughters, Kathy Stern, Karen (Mark) Hammond, and Carole (Jim) Krebs; his former wife, Elizabeth Reilly; six grandchildren; and extended family and friends. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Martha (Nock) Mella and brothers, Ralph, Bill and Charles.

Chip graduated from the University of Pittsburgh and served his community as a Ross Township Police Officer, retiring in 1993 after 25 years on the force.

He was also a U.S. Army veteran. An avid outdoor adventurer, he enjoyed fishing, hunting, and gardening. His true passion was landscaping.

Visitation will be 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Thursday at , 806 Perry Hwy., North Hills, where a blessing service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday.
