Fire Spreads from One West View Home to Another

Firefighters battle flames and dropping temperatures.

The Allegheny County and West View Fire Marshals are working to determine the cause of a fire Sunday night in a home at 17 Fairview Ave. The fire broke out shortly before 11 p.m. and eventually spread to the home next door at 19 Fairview Ave.

Neighbors say a woman and four children lived in the home where the fire broke out, but the children were not at home at the time. The woman escaped unharmed.

"It looks like it started right there on the porch," said Dave Hunt, who lives next door at 15 Fairview. "The heat was so intense, it cracked the windows on the side of my porch."

Sunday night's dropping temperatures made a difficult job even harder for firefighters.

“It’s always an issue,” West View Borough Fire Marshal Chuck Kovack told WTAE-TV.  “You can see the streets freezing up, especially on the hill and the hoses kind of freeze inside of that.”

The American Red Cross is assisting the family.
