McCandless Dermatologist Pleads Guilty to Filing False Income Tax Return

Neil M. Niren, M.D. faces up to three years in prison and a fine of $250,000.

Neil M. Niren, whose Dermatology office is in the Passavant Professional Building in McCandless, pleaded guilty Friday to one count of filing a false tax return.

"In connection with the guilty plea, the court was advised that Niren, who operated his medical practice as a sole proprietorship, knowingly filed a false income tax return for 2005. Niren also accepted responsibility for filing false tax returns for years 2006 through 2008." stated a release from U.S Attorney David J. Hickton.

"Niren maintained two sets of accounting books and knowingly concealed payments received directly from patients. The total amount of tax loss to the federal government as a result of Niren’s false returns is $356,998.00," the release stated.

Niren, of Pittsburgh's East End, will be sentenced Nov. 8. He faces up to three years in prison and a fine of $250,000, or both. He is currently free on bond.
