North Hills A Target Area For DUI Crackdown

The enforcement effort will concentrate on the Independence Day holiday week.

PennDOT is spreading the word that police in the North Hills will be out in force starting tonight and throughout the 4th of July holiday looking for drunk or impaired drivers. 

PennDOT announced Thursday that the West Deer Police Department would be the new coordinating department for the North Hills DUI Task Force. 

The task force also includes the ,  , Etna, Shaler, O’Hara, Indiana and Northern Regional Police Departments. The task force will begin impaired-driving enforcement with roving patrols tonight.

The enforcement is part of a national “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” crackdown, with Pennsylvania’s efforts funded through part of PennDOT’s statewide investment of federal funds from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.  Pennsylvania’s enforcement crackdown will run through July 8. 

According to PennDOT data, there were 897 crashes resulting in 14 fatalities statewide over the Independence Day weekend in 2011.

Alcohol was a factor in 146 of those crashes and six of the deaths.
