Police & Fire Offer Free Bicycle Safety Checks Saturday

The Summer Safety Program, an annual event open to West View and Ross residents, will also feature a juggler, finger-printing, fire trucks and police cars.

The event is geared mostly toward children, but adults are welcome to bring their bicycles by as well, said Mary Bernhard, president of the

“They’ll check the brakes, they’ll check the tires, fix a chain,” she said.

The bikes can also be registered and given a unique number that will help the police return the bicycle to its owner if it is stolen.

Two bicycles donated by , a girl’s bicycle and a boy’s bicycle, will also be raffled off, said D.A.R.E and crime prevention Officer Matthew Holland, who is helping organize the event. The winners will be announced around 2:45 p.m., but they do not have to be present at that time to claim the prizes.

Other items will be given away as well including Pirates tickets, an autographed picture of Steelers player and "Dancing with the Stars" champion Hines Ward, and gift certificates to the Pittsburgh Zoo. Free food will also be available at the event including hot dogs, pizza, cookies and donuts.
