Zoo Will Remove Painted Dogs Observation Platform

'Out of respect for the community and for the Derkosh family, the observation platform of the exhibit at issue would be removed.' - Mike Manko, district attorney's office

The observation platform at the Pittsburgh Zoo from which 2-year-old Maddox Derkosh of Whitehall Borough fell to his death in the African painted dogs exhibit will be removed, according to a spokesman at the Allegheny County District Attorney's Office.

"In an effort to facilitate the ongoing review of the circumstances surrounding the death of Maddox Derkosh at the Pittsburgh Zoo, District Attorney (Stephen A.) Zappala (Jr.) met this morning with Dr. Barbara Baker and the City of Pittsburgh police officers who responded to the scene," said spokesman Mike Manko in an email to reporters.

Maddox was visiting the zoo with his mother on Nov. 4 when he fell from the top of a platform railing to the ground inside of the dogs exhibit and was mauled to death.

"The meeting, which lasted approximately two hours, included a walk-through of the exhibit and was a productive step towards ensuring that this tragedy will not reoccur in the future," Manko said.

"To that end, Dr. Baker advised the district attorney that, out of respect for the community and for the Derkosh family, the observation platform of the exhibit at issue would be removed."

Yes, I believe that is a good decision. However, I also believe that this was a tragic accident caused by the mother not using good judgment. There is no way the zoo should be held responsible in any way, shape or form.

no one wants to look at these ugly things anyway

I agree 100%.... why would we hold the zoo responsible for leaving an opening over a pack of viscious wild dogs? I mean, its not like it was bears or the lions, right? They would have never done it overlooking the lions den? And who would ever think that a mother would be holding her child in her arms, being one year old and all? and who would think the child might squirm? Why would children be at the zoo anyway? I think an opening over a pack of wild dogs is a genius idea!

and if you believe the woman put the child on the railing, you probably believe the zoo staff was there immediately and the police were there in ten minutes.... its called damage control aka CYA

the zookeepers are my heroes! They shot empty tranquilizers at the dogs yay! He laiod there and bled to death. This was a situation where every second counted and I would also like to thank the cowards who stood and watched.... all twenty of them. They all should have entered and chased the dogs
