Cat Complaints: Ross Township's Options Limited

Two residents of Clarion Avenue say their yards are a mess because of one owner's cats.

Mary Bozich and Tammy Dangelo told the Ross Township Commissioners Monday they are fed up with the cats roaming through their yards along Clarion Avenue.

“They are destroying my yard, my flower beds, my property last year, this year and what can we do about it? Nobody seems to want to help us," Bozich said. "There’s an ordinance in Ross township that says that if they are a nuisance, something can be done. Well they are a nuisance. They’re destroying my property. Why have an ordinance if you can’t enforce it?"

Commissioner David Mikec said enforcing the ordinance is more difficult than it sounds.

"I don’t know how you pinpoint any one cat, unless you do a DNA sample," he said. "If you trap the cat on your property, then it’s considered a nuisance."

But traps cost money, something Bozich doesn't believe she should have to pay for.

“I wish I had more I could tell you," said Board President Grant Montgomery. "We’ll talk to code enforcement and have them address it directly."

Officer Robert Muchenski said he is aware of the problem on Clarion Avenue, but says there is little he can do either.

"Every since Triangle pet went out of business, there is no animal control officer or agency to handle these types of complaints in the township right now," he said.
