Report: Ohio Developer to Tear Down Former Northway Elementary

Replacing the school with a hotel is one of the options under consideration.

The Ohio developer, which is purchasing the Shoppes at Northway and the former Northway Elementary School, plans to tear down the school, and possibly replace it with a hotel.

“We will eventually demolish the school building and integrate that site into the total master plan of development,” Kevin Fallon, Levey & Company's vice president of development told the Pittsburgh Tribune Review .

He, and other sources, have confirmed that some thought is being given to a hotel there.

“We are kicking around a lot of possible development ideas for the mall and the school site, but no master plan has yet been developed,” Fallon told the Trib.

The school is currently the temporary home of the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, which is building a new, permanent church in McCandless.

Ross Township  and West View  residents can hear first hand what may be planned for the Shoppes at Northway and the school when Levey and Company holds a public meeting on Wednesday, Dec. 5 at 7 p.m. in the upper level of the mall, just outside the entrance to Dick's Sporting goods.

Ferraro said the plans are very preliminary, and far from finalized.

"They don't have any firm contracts yet, what they've discussed has been hypothetical. It's going to be relocating some of the establishments up there, they're talking about professional office space for doctors and lawyers, they're talking about a restaurant, they're talking about another grocery store," he said. "They have some big plans, I would recommend you try to attend the meeting on the 5th."

Ferraro said anyone wanting to attend the Dec. 5 meeting should call the township at 412-931-7055 to give planners an idea of how big an audience to expect.
