North Hills School Board Approves Changes in School Start & Dismissal Times

Superintendent Dr. Patrick Mannarino argued that by slightly modifying the hours of the school day at all grade levels, the district could save up to $464,300 in transportation costs.

The North Hills school board voted Monday night to approve changes to the bell and busing schedule starting in the 2013-14 school year.

The vote was eight to one with board member Jeff Meyer voting no.

"In my mind I have too many uncertainties, and unfortunately, the uncertainties aren't going to be answered until we try it out," Meyer said just prior to the vote.

Board member Edward Wielgus said that while the district was on firm financial footing, it could not afford not to consider ways of trimming its transportation costs.

"Our transportation budget is the fourth largest expenditure of the district, we pay two and a half million dollars a year to transport our children by bus," he said. "If we don't do something like this, it's going to have to come from programs and that means cutting employees and raising class sizes and things of that nature."
