North Hills School Board Approves Changes in School Start & Dismissal Times

Superintendent Dr. Patrick Mannarino argued that by slightly modifying the hours of the school day at all grade levels, the district could save up to $464,300 in transportation costs.

The North Hills school board voted Monday night to approve changes to the bell and busing schedule starting in the 2013-14 school year.

The vote was eight to one with board member Jeff Meyer voting no.

"In my mind I have too many uncertainties, and unfortunately, the uncertainties aren't going to be answered until we try it out," Meyer said just prior to the vote.

each year due to the elimination of six to 10 buses.

Board member Edward Wielgus said that while the district was on firm financial footing, it could not afford not to consider ways of trimming its transportation costs.

"Our transportation budget is the fourth largest expenditure of the district, we pay two and a half million dollars a year to transport our children by bus," he said. "If we don't do something like this, it's going to have to come from programs and that means cutting employees and raising class sizes and things of that nature."

Not sure I'm happy about my kindergartner and first grader riding the bus with jr high kids. And I'm not happy about having to put my boys to bed earlier in order for them to get up earlier so they can take a ride to the jr high to drop those students off first and then get dropped off at their school. I understand we could be losing teachers like other districts, but I am also thinking of how this change will affect my boys. There already isn't enough time in the evening in our house to spend much quality time together, let alone having to send them to bed 1/2 hour earlier in order to get up earlier. I wouldn't mind getting up earlier to start their day earlier, it's the fact that my boys must get up earlier to drive someone else's child off at school first before they get dropped off.

No elementary school children will be riding with Middle School children in the mornings, so your children will not be getting up earlier to drive someone else's child to school before them. If your child is attending West View or Highcliff Elementary Schools, their school is actually starting 1/2 hour earlier. Their morning bus will take them from their bus stop to their elementary school without any Middle School students on board and without stopping at the Middle School. Again, if your child is attending West View or Highcliff Elementary schools, in the afternoon there will be some Middle School students on your child's bus when it arrives to take your child home. This will have no impact on the ride times of your elementary school children as these children will get off at the same stops as the elementary school children..

Ok thank you David for clarifying, I guess I misunderstood an article I read when it was just a proposal.

I think having to catch the bus at 6:55 every morning is early enough. Does this mean that their pick-up time will now be 6:35?? That is a little crazy.
