North Hills Soccer Gets a Sign to Mark the Spot

A mother-daughter team designed and installed a sign at Reis Run Park to make it easier to find the soccer fields. It only took three years.

Three years after the first attempt to put in better sinage marking Reis Run Park and the North Hills soccer fields, Barb Traynor and her daughter Brittney finally achieved their goal.

The 6-foot tall and 5-foot wide sign made of heavy acrylic was installed last week at the entrance to the park at 260 Reis Run Road. Designed by 17-year-old Brittney Traynor, the sign features a soccer ball and red and white colors in honor of the North Hills School District. It can be seen from either direction on Reis Run Road.

“It was my baby to get the sign in,”  said Barb Traynor, who helps organize the North Hills Soccer Club and keep the fields at Reis Run in good condition.

The unmarked fields were difficult for people to find, the Traynors said. The sign seemed like a simple solution.

Brittney Traynor, who plays forward in both club soccer and varsity soccer for the school district, said she’d help by designing it -- which turned out to be the easy part.

“I wanted to keep it simple so people would see it,” she said, adding that she took a graphic design class in school and used the lessons from there to craft the sign’s look.

But the process of installing the sign became a lesson in civics. The first sign, put up in 2008, had to be removed because the Traynors didn’t have permission from Ross Township or the School Board. Last month, they finally achieved both, after giving presentations, securing the votes and making sure the right inspections were done on the day they installed it.

“It's a very complex thing," Barb Traynor said.

Now installed, the Traynors are proud to show it off. They will be working on finishing the landscaping around the sign this week.
