Was it the right move? Answer our Patch Poll or leave your opinion in the comments section.

Fans of the black and gold are still buzzing from Wednesday's big news that the Pittsburgh Steelers are cutting wide receiver Hines Ward from the roster.

In a statement posted on the Steelers website, Steelers President Art Rooney II said the team would release Ward of his contract prior to the start of the 2012 NFL season.

“Hines has been an integral part of our success since we drafted him in 1998, and we will forever be grateful for what he has helped us achieve,” Rooney said. “He has meant so much to this organization, both on and off the field, and we appreciate his efforts over the past 14 years. Hines’ accomplishments are numerous, and he will always be thought of as one of the all-time great Steelers. We wish him nothing but the best.”

Ward quickly followed up with a statement that lamented the decision. Although fans won’t see No. 86 in a black-and-gold jersey this fall, the 14-year Steelers veteran might still end up in another team’s colors.

Ward promised that “I still have more football left in me” and said that he looked forward to playing in the NFL in the upcoming season.

“This isn't how I wanted this chapter of my career to end. I did everything in my power to remain a Steeler and finish what I started here 14 years ago,” he said. “I want to thank the organization, my teammates and coaches and everyone who made my run as a Steeler the best years of my life.

Sometimes called “the happiest man in football” because of the infectious grin he displayed on the playing field, Ward is the Steelers’ all-time leader in reception, receiving yards, receiving touchdowns and 100-yard receiving games. Already a familiar face to football fans, Ward captured the nation's spotlight after cha-cha-ing his way to victory in the 2011 season of Dancing with the Stars.

In the week’s leading to Wednesday’s news, Ward has been vocal about his desire to finish his career with the Steelers, even saying he would restructure his contract to make sure he stays with the team.

He wasn't the only one shocked by the Steelers' action.

The decision to release Ward has sparked debate from football fans across the country. As of early Thursday morning, nearly 36,000 people have left messages of support on Ward’s Facebook page.

We want to know what you think. Are you sad to see Ward go? Or was releasing the wide-receiver the right decision? Does Ward still have some football left in him—and would you support him if he goes to another team? Answer our Patch Poll or leave your opinion in the comment section.
