North Hills Athletic Director: 'Just Felt Time was Right' to Step Down

Dan Cardone says he does not have any specific plans, but looks forward to "another challenge."

Dan Cardone, who announced Monday he was stepping down after more than 20 years as North Hills Director of Athletics and Activities, was asked by North Hills Patch to reflect on his long and successful career. Looking back: North Hills has a long standing tradition of success in athletics. They have had great leaders in athletic directors and coaches prior to my arrival. Our football stadium and baseball fields are named after Mario Martorelli and Guy Guadagnino. I just felt it was my responsibility and honor to be a caretaker of what occurred here. I could not help but to achieve some level of success as an athletic administrator because we have such great community who respects the value of hard work. This is coupled with an appreciation…

Ross Commissioners to Vote on Shorter Trash Pickup Hours

The proposal is in reaction to residents' complaints of noisy garbage trucks late at night.

Among the items on the agenda for Wednesday's meeting of the Ross Township Board of Commissioners is a proposal to shorten the hours in which trash can be collected. Currently, commercial and non-residential trash can be collected between 6 a.m. and 11 p.m. An amendment to the township's solid waste disposal ordinance would change the hours to 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. The commissioners acted after hearing complaints from two residents who complained about noisy, night garbage collections near three North Hills school district buildings. Frank Kodrich lives on First Avenue, near the Senior High School. “Right now we have a dumpster that comes in at roughly 10:30 or 11 o’clock at night," Kodrich told the commissioners. "Once he picks up that …

North Hills School Board Calls for Cyber Charter Funding Reform

North Superintendent Dr. Patrick Mannarino says “Pennsylvania’s flawed and overly generous funding formula has become too large of a burden for North Hills School District and our taxpayers."

The North Hills School Board recently approved a resolution calling for cyber charter school funding reform to rectify tuition inequities. Pennsylvania’s current funding formula is not based on actual instructional costs, and tuition paid to cyber charter schools far exceeds the cost of educating a student. “North Hills cyber charter school expenditures for the past five years reflect extraordinary costs that are borne nearly entirely by Ross and West View taxpayers,” said Dr. Patrick J. Mannarino, North Hills superintendent. “As school districts find their budgets tightened, Pennsylvania’s flawed and overly generous funding formula has become too large of a burden for North Hills School District and our taxpayers." Since 2008, North Hills…
