Former County Health Director Bruce Dixon Dies

Dixon became a consultant to the health department in 1979 before he was hired in 1992 by the county.

Dr. Bruce Dixon, the former Allegheny County Health Department head, died overnight at UPMC Presbyterian, the Post-Gazette reports. The county medical examiner's office said Dixon, 74, a Forest Hills resident, died of a blood infection caused by an inflammation of his gallbladder. He was ousted from his job in March 2012 by the county Board of Health, acting at the request of Allegheny County Chief Executive Rich Fitzgerald, according to the Post-Gazette. “For over 20 years, Dr. Bruce Dixon was the ultimate public servant, dedicating his life to serving the needs of the residents of Allegheny County through his direction of the Allegheny County Health Department," Fitzgerald said in a statement issued this morning. Obituary: Jeffrey W. Fromlak

Fromlak, son of West View's police chief and manager, was killed in a car accident Sunday.

Funeral arrangements are now complete for Jeffrey W. Fromlak, 26 of McCandless, who died in a rollover accident on Route 19 in McCandless Sunday night. Fromlak is the son of West View Police Chief and Borough Manager Bruce Fromlak.  McCandless police say Fromlak was driving south on Route 19 just past the split with McKnight Road when he lost control and his car rolled over into a grassy median.  The Schellhaas Funeral home in West View, which is handling the arrangements, posted this obituary on its website: Jeffrey W. Family of Boy Mauled at Zoo Appeals for Toy Trucks for Charity

Trucks can be donated at Maddox Derkosh's funeral Mass at St. Bernard Church in Mt. Lebanon on Friday.

The Derkosh family of Whitehall Borough is asking that, in lieu of flowers, mourners give toy construction trucks to be donated to a children's Christmas charity in the memory of 2-year old Maddox Derkosh, who died tragically at the Pittsburgh Zoo on Sunday. The trucks will be accepted at Derkosh's funeral Mass at St. Bernard Church in Mt. Lebanon at 10 a.m. on Friday, according to Maddox's obituary on the William Slater II Funeral Service website. Trucks can also be dropped off at the Whitehall Police Department lobby throughout Wednesday. Before Friday's funeral and toy trucks collection, friends will be welcomed for a viewing of Maddox at the Slater Funeral Service in Scott Township from 2 to 8 p.m. on Thursday. Legendary Ross Township Fire Chief Haschke Remembered

Berkeley Hills Fire Company Chief John C. Haschke leaves a legacy of progress to Ross Township.

The Berkeley Hills Fire Company lost a beloved leader recently with the passing of Chief Emeritus John C. Haschke.   Although he officially retired in 1986, he continued to serve as a mentor to younger firefighters, a trusted advisor to current company officers, and also contributed to several committees, according to the fire company's website tribute. In addition, he was often at the Ross Township fire station, sharing his stories and experiences until his passing on October 6 at age 88.  He died of heart failure at UPMC Passavant in McCandless. Visitation Set for Evans City Soldier Killed In Afghanistan

Services for Staff Sgt. Eric Holman will take place at Devlin Funeral Home in Cranberry.

Services for Staff Sgt. Eric Holman will be held this weekend at Devlin Funeral Home in Cranberry, An Army Explosive Ordnance Tech, Holman, of Evans City, was killed Aug. 15 in the Ghazni province of Afghanistan by an improvised explosive device. He was 39. A 1990 grad of Avonworth High School and a Penn State University alumnus, Holman hailed from Ohio Township. He was married to Terri Holman and the father to a 7-year-old-son, Misha. According to his online obituary, Holman was a former member of the elite US Army Golden Knights parachute team and performed at various stadiums and air shows across the country. After leaving the Knights, he entered Explosive Ordnance Disposition training. In January, he was deployed to Afghanistan with …

J. Evans Rose, Jr., Prominent Republican and Former Sewickley Heights Council President

Rose was involved in Republican politics in Pennsylvania, including serving as a close adviser to former Governor Richard Thornburgh and as state finance co-chairman in 2004 for Bush-Cheney.

J. Evans Rose, Jr. of Sewickley passed away Friday, July 20 at Villa St. Joseph, Baden. He was 80. Rose was a well-known fundraiser and strategist in local, state and national Republican circles as well as an attorney and former president of Sewickley Heights Council. He was a longtime adviser to Richard Thornburgh, the former governor of Pennsylvana and U.S. Attorney General.  “Although he never ran for or held statewide office, Evans Rose was a giant in Pennsylvania Republican politics during the last 50 years," said Thornburgh, of Rosslyn Farms. Retired Perrysville Cabinet Maker Dies a Month Shy of 106th Birthday

William A. Keyser built his own business, despite having never graduated from high school.

William (Bill) Keyser spent his childhood walking along the muddy streets and wooden sidewalks of Swissvale and Wilmerding.  He was a young teenager when World War I came to a close and he married the love of his life during the depths of the Great Depression. He retired before the end of the Vietnam War.  Keyser, of Perrysville, died June 7, a month shy of his 106th birthday.  Bill Keyser was born July 9, 1906, in the Manchester neighborhood of Pittsburgh’s North Side. Theodore Roosevelt was President of the United States and the Dow Jones Industrial Average topped 100 points for the first time in history that year.  His formal education stopped at age 11 after his father lost both legs in a train accident in Wilmerding.
