See which streets will be paved this summer.
The Ross Township Board of Commissioners voted 8-0 Wednesday to shorten the the hours in which trash can be collected. Board President Grant Montgomery was absent. The amendment to the township's solid waste disposal ordinance limits the collection of commercial and non-residential trash to the hours of 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Previously, the hours were 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. The commissioners acted after hearing complaints from two residents who complained about noisy, night garbage collections near three North Hills school district buildings. In other action.. The commissioners awarded the 2013 township road paving program to Youngblood Paving for $830,315. 11 streets will be repaved. The Ross Township resident was recently inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame.
Bruno Sammartino is being honored in recognition of the 50th anniversary of his first WWE Championship title on May 17, 1963. Alleunty Executive Rich Fitzgerald, along with Council President Charles Martoni and Council Member John DeFazio, honored Sammartino Friday on the Grand Staircase and Gallery at the Allegheny County Courthouse. Sammartino was inducted last month into the WWE Hall of Fame. In celebration of his many accomplishments, Fitzgerald and the council members declared May 17, 2013 as Bruno Sammartino Day in Allegheny County. Detour signs will be posted to guide drivers during the work.
Sutter Road (Route 4018) in Ross Township and Shaler will be closed to traffic on Wednesday, May 15. PennDOT said crews will be patching a pipe trench across the roadway between Amity Drive and Clare Street. The closing will occur from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday. The massive Oak blocked the family's driveway for several days.
Jim Capes had just returned from work last Wednesday, May 8, when a massive oak tree fell on his property, missing his house at 132 Reis Run Road in Ross Township, but blocking his driveway. For days, Capes and his son did what they could to remove the branches and limbs, but they were no match for the larger parts of the tree. His insurance company would not pay to remove the tree, and Capes could not afford the estimated $5,000 price tag. The tree had trapped his family, and was preventing him from getting back to work Enter Admiral Tree Service of Wexford. The new store is expected to open sometime this summer.
Staples, which already shares space with Duro Dry Cleaners at the entrance to North Hills Village on McKnight Road in Ross Township, is making more room for a Destination XL Men's clothing store. Destination XL, which caters to big and tall customers, has another store at 5205 Campbells Run Road in Robinson. The clothing store will occupy the portion of Staples closest to McKnight Road. Workers have installed a wall dividing the two businesses, and built a separate entrance for the clothing store. A car hit a utility pole at the intersection of McKnight Road and Stevens Drive.
Up to 2,800 Duquesne Light customers in Ross and West View awoke to no electricity Sunday morning after a car collided with a utility pole at the intersection of McKnight Road and Stevens Drive in Ross Township. No word of if anyone was seriously hurt in the accident, which occurred around 4 a.m. "We hope to have everyone restored by 4 p.m. this afternoon," said Brian Knavish, Duquesne Light Spokesman.
